Misconceptions
Every day numerous children suffer abuse and neglect in Marin County. Although Marin is regarded as a safe and affluent community, in truth it is a community where not everyone is safe or affluent.  And when it comes to child abuse, affluence is no guarantee of safety. Aside from the economic inequities, many of Marin’s children suffer from abuse in isolation and silence. On one side, there is a rapidly growing population of recent immigrants often lacking the ability to ask for help from a community with different values, standards and traditions than those that guided and sustained their families in other cultures. And on the other side, some children, whose families have adequate resources and long standing community ties, are prevented from receiving help because an abusive adult can insulate the family system and hide it from scrutiny. Many children do not receive attention from the community until school authorities identify their problems. Still other children call attention to their family problems by violating community standards or committing crimes.

In 2004 Marin County Child Protective Services received 1,835 child abuse related calls, of which 48% were related to neglect, 29% to physical abuse, 17% to sexual abuse, and 6% to other reasons. Of these it was necessary to place an estimated 85 children in foster care or group homes. Last year 500 cases were filed with juvenile probation.

Dedicated community and volunteer involvement
At Marin Advocates for Children (MAC), we are dedicated to increasing community involvement, mission awareness and volunteer support. We have taken several steps to recruit and attract talented volunteers who desire to work closely with MAC to make a difference in the impact of our mission. Our attention to program efficacy, our passion for serving the best interests of children, and our understanding of the complex socioeconomic perceptions of Marin, strengthens our voice in the community and prepares us for the challenges that lie ahead in the coming year.

Help within reach
As we work to alert our community that Marin is not immune to the issues of child abuse and neglect, we share the knowledge and power that there is help within reach for abused and neglected children. We now have the framework in place to provide preventive measures against abuse and advocate for the best interests of those abused children who do not yet know the course of their future. We commit to being proactive, continually accessible and highly responsive to our community, generating innovative solutions and supporting change for the interest of all Marin children.

Sincerely,
Charles Mead
Executive Director
