Indicators of abuse are not in and of themselves conclusive evidence of abuse. They are“clues”or “red flags” that help may be needed.

Emotional Maltreatment

Physical Indicators

  Emotional maltreatment often less tangible than other forms of child abuse and neglect, and is more frequently indicated by behaviors of the child caretaker

Caretaker's Indicators

  Blames or belittles child

  Is cold and rejecting

  Withholds love

  Seems uninterested in child’s problems

  Does not support, encourage, guide or show positive behavior towards child

  Has abuse in own childhood
